Visas for China and Elsewhere

Travel to the People's Republic of China (PRC)

Americans need visas to visit China. Transit visas are required for any stop (even if you do not exit the plane or train) in China. These visas are available only from the Chinese authorities and are not issued by the American Consulate.


Obtaining a Chinese Visa in Hong Kong

Visa Problems
Some Americans have reported to us requests by Chinese officials for additional documents or information, or other problems relating to visas. The decision to issue a visa, or on what type and duration of visa to issue, rests exclusively with the Chinese visa officials. The American Consulate cannot intervene in individual visa cases.

Hong Kong
For the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region only, a passport and onward/return transportation ticket are required for American Citizen visitors. Visas are not required for tourist/business stay of up to 90 days. For questions regarding working or study visas, or extensions of your 90 day stay, please contact the Hong Kong Immigration Department directly at 2824-6111, or online at Immigration Department website.

Tibet
The Chinese Government requires U.S. citizens wishing to visit Tibet to apply in advance for approval from the Tourist Administration of the Tibetan Autonomous Region. In Hong Kong, U.S. citizens wishing to travel to Tibet should contact the following travel agency for permission and arrangements:
