HOW TO VOTE IN HONG KONG AND MACAU
As Election Day (November 4, 2008) approaches, many Americans are interested in voting. There are several different methods through which you can cast your ballot in the upcoming election, and the Consulate is also organizing three events to make voting easier.
OVERSEAS VOTING DAY IN HONG KONG – OCTOBER 15
On Wednesday, October 15, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., the U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong will host an Overseas Voting Day where American Citizens can complete any election materials, including the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot. American Citizens are asked to bring their U.S. passport and U.S. voting address. Voters should come to the Consulate prepared to write in the names of their Congressional and Presidential choices.
During the extended hours, Consular Officers will be available to notarize (if required), fax and mail election materials to the United States at no charge. The U.S. Consulate General is located at 26 Garden Road, Central, opposite the lower Peak Tram terminus.
OVERSEAS VOTING DAY IN MACAU – OCTOBER 22
On Wednesday, October 22, the Consulate will hold two voting events in Macau.
The first will be held from 9:30am-10:30am at Ocean Tower, No. 388, Avenida dos Jardins do Oceano, 5/F, Taipa.
The second will be held from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Academy of Music, located at Rua de Santa Clara, No. 19, 2/F, adjacent to City Hall and near Catholic Social Services, Rua de Santa Clara 13, Macau.
American Citizens can complete any election materials, including the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot, at both events. American Citizens are asked to bring their U.S. passport and U.S. voting address. Voters should come to the events prepared to write in the names of their Congressional and Presidential choices.
During these events, Consular Officers will be available to notarize (if required), fax and mail election materials to the United States at no charge.
DOWNLOAD FORMS ONLINE AND VOTE BY MAIL
The Federal Voting Assistance Program website, http://www.fvap.gov, has voter registration forms, ballot request forms, and the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB). The FWAB can be used if you have already requested an absentee ballot but it has not yet arrived. The FWAB only allows you to vote for president, senator, and member of the House of Representatives.
If you complete any of the forms on http://www.fvap.gov, you can print them out and mail them yourself. In addition to regular postal services, you may wish to consider sending such materials through express mail services such as DHL or FedEx. This year, in partnership with the Overseas Vote Foundation, FedEx is offering free overnight shipping of ballots to the United States. For more information, please see http://www.overseasvotefoundation.org.
All forms on http://www.fvap.gov are also available at the Consulate. If you wish to complete these forms at the Consulate or drop off any election materials for the Consulate to mail or fax on your behalf, you may come by the Consulate during regular business hours without an appointment. (Please note that not all states accept election materials by fax.) We can also notarize forms for the few states which require notarization at no charge.
