Christopher Marut (馬啟思) assumed his responsibilities as Acting Consul General of the United States Consulate General in Hong Kong on August 3, 2009, after serving as Deputy Consul General since July 2007.
A career member of the United States Senior Foreign Service, Mr. Marut served as Director of the Office of Regional and Security Policy in the State Department's Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs in 2005-06. He was twice assigned to the Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs, most recently as Deputy Director for Economic Affairs, from 2002-2004, and has also worked in the State Department's Economic Bureau. Mr. Marut's overseas assignments have included the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong and the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. He also has served at the American Institute in Taiwan.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service in 1984, Mr. Marut worked in banking in Connecticut and subsequently in international business in Asia.
Mr. Marut was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He has a BBA from the University of Notre Dame, an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies from the College of Naval Warfare in Newport, Rhode Island. Mr. Marut is married and has two children.
