Statement by Consul General Michael Klosson

January 11, 2000

We have all been shocked and dismayed by the discovery of three dead attempted migrants aboard a ship that docked in Seattle today. This reminds us once again of the horrors of this trade in human beings, and of the reprehensible and degrading practices of the criminal syndicates who promote it. I hope that people in China and Hong Kong as well as in other countries will denounce these syndicates for what they are: ruthless exploiters of Chinese (and other) people. This tragedy, and the recent surge in activity by these "snakeheads" is all the more reason to redouble efforts to combat this cold-blooded and inhuman crime.
