ALICE WALKER: "EVERYDAY USE"
DVD, 26minutes,produced 2005, distributed by Films Media Group.
This is a film adaptation of Alice Walker's short story "Everyday Use." It is the story of Maggie, a young woman who has never ventured outside her rural community, who sees an old family quilt - an heirloom promised to her - as something that has both practical utility as well as tradition. Her educated, social activist sister wants to hang it on the wall as folk art. A study in class difference and reclamation of Black history, this story takes place during a time when many Blacks were seeking their cultural roots in Africa. The quilt means different things to these two sisters whose lives differ not only materially and but also with respect to the values that frame their lives.
