Frontline: Growing Up Online
60 minutes, produced by WGBH in 2008.
FRONTLINE; GROWING UP ONLINE looks at the Internet through the eyes of teens and their parents, using extraordinary vignettes - from bullying to instant fame and sexual predators. GROWING UP ONLINE investigates the risks, realities and misconceptions of teen self-expression on the Web.
The documentary takes viewers inside the very public private worlds that kids are creating online, raising important questions about how the Internet is transforming childhood. Kids are able to have a private space, communicate with their friends and have an entire social life outside the range of their parents, without actually having to leave the house.
In the recent past, the Internet and digital world was something that belonged to adults, and now it's something that really is the province of teenagers.
GROWING UP ONLINE takes viewers to a high school where teachers are trying to figure out how to reach a generation that no longer reads books or newspapers. The new internet software is used in many classrooms. Teachers either adapt to the new online technology and software or find their role as a teacher eroding.
