Our Town
120 minutes
Starring Paul Newman. This production was shot at Broadway's Booth Theater in 2003. It was produced by Showtime and PBS Exxon Mobil Masterpiece Theater.
Set at the turn of the twentieth century, the play OUR TOWN reveals the ordinary lives of the people of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire.
Leading American actor Paul Newman, making his first Broadway appearance in 38 years, plays the Stage
Manager - the all-knowing narrator of the story. As the Stage Manager, Newman narrates play-write
Thornton Wilder's immortal tale of love, marriage and death and daily life.
At the center of the story are Emily Webb and George Gibbs, young lovers who grow up, get married and
start a family. When Emily dies during childbirth, she joins the other townspeople who have passed on and now observe from the grave the lives of those left behind. Given the chance to relive one day, Emily chooses her twelfth birthday and is crushed when she realizes how unable we - the living - are to appreciate the blissful simplicity of our existences, placing "a value above all price for the smallest events in our daily life."
In 1938, Thornton Wilder was awarded the Pulitzer Price for OUR TOWN.
