Hong Kong-America Center Hong Kong-America Center

The Hong Kong - America Center promotes mutual understanding between Hong Kong and American societies, and between Chinese and American peoples over the bridge of Hong Kong. The Center conducts educational and cultural exchange programs across the disciplines involving its five member universities in Hong Kong. Working closely with the U.S. Consulate and Hong Kong government, the Center administers aspects of the Fulbright program in Hong Kong and assists Fulbright activities in China.

The Center is governed by a distinguished board of patrons of education and of the Hong Kong relationship to the United States. The Chairman is Mr C.C. Tung of OOCL, and the Vice Chairman is Mr Karl Kwok of Wing On International Holdings. The Center's Director is Dr. Glenn Shive. Funding comes from annual membership fees from participating universities, philanthropic gifts from patrons and board members, and revenue earned from grants and contracts for programs and services.

The Center administers annual exchange programs such as the Fulbright Hong Kong Scholars Program and hosts annual regional scholarly events such as the Fulbright China Research Forum. In addition, the Center develops programs with its member universities in five general areas: Sino-American Relations, Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta in a Global Context, Innovation in Higher Education, NGOs and Philanthropy in Hong Kong, and American Studies in Asian Contexts.

The American Studies Resource Library, hosted at United College in CUHK, has a general collection on the U.S. and a specialized research collection about William Faulkner and southern writers. The HKAC works closely with the Institute of International Education office in Hong Kong, and serves as the local representative of the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The offices of the Center are located in the Esther Lee Building of Chung Chi College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Shatin, NT. The telephone is 852- 2609-8748. Fax is 852-2603-5797.
