May 12, 2008, at 2:28 p.m. local time, a strong earthquake hit Sichuan province in China's heartland, killing thousands and destroying the homes and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands. On the occasion of the earthquake's one-year anniversary, the U.S. Consulate General for Hong Kong and Macau lowered the U.S. flag to half mast on Tuesday, May 12, at 2:28 p.m. in remembrance of those who suffered from this horrendous natural disaster.

We join all those in China and around the world in observing the anniversary of this tragic event. The thoughts of the American people remain with the people of China.
