Question Taken at the May 19, 2006 Daily Press Briefing
Taiwan -- The World Health Assembly
Question: What is the U.S. position on Taiwan's bid for observer status at the WHO World Health Assembly?
Answer: Our position is clear and unchanged. We support the goal of Taiwan's participation in the work of the World Health Organization (WHO), including observer status at the World Health Assembly.
Our support for Taiwan's participation does not conflict with our one China policy.
We applaud the WHO and China for steps taken last year that have greatly increased Taiwan's ability to participate in technical conferences of the World Health Organization.
Meanwhile, the United States is pleased that Taiwan's Center for Disease Control announced on May 15 Taiwan's voluntary early compliance with the provisions of the International Health Regulations.
We would refer you to the Department of Health and Human Services for details related to international health matters.
