Taiwan/China: New Cross-Strait Flights
Question: What is the U.S. reaction to the reported agreement between Taiwan and China on charter flights for passengers on holidays and for cargo?
Answer: The United States welcomes the simultaneous announcement June 14 in Taipei and Beijing of a new agreement on passenger and cargo charter flights across the Taiwan Strait. The agreement is an important step forward in boosting Cross-Strait contacts, which are in the interest of the people on both sides of the Strait and of regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
The United States urges Beijing and Taipei to further advance Cross-Strait cooperation and dialogue, including direct discussions between the authorities in Beijing and Taiwan's elected leaders.
