Question Taken at the October 17, 2006 Press Briefing: Taiwan - Proposed Constitutional Changes

Question: What is the U.S. view of the Taiwan President's remarks regarding the establishment of a "Second Republic".

Answer: The United States does not support Taiwan independence. We oppose unilateral changes to the status quo by either side.
